The site inspection concluded that there are no arborial issues with the tree. All visual indicators show that the tree is in good health and condition.
The Summit developers, Mantle Group Hospitality, claimed to not have asked for a heritage relaxation for the removal of the Moreton Bay Fig tree next to the restaurant so that they can add a deck area out the back.....
HOWEVER, an arborist was commissioned by Brisbane City Council to prepare a Tree Hazard Evaluation on one subject tree. Which tree? The Moreton Bay Fig at the back of the Summit Restaurant. What a coincidence! The tree is estimated to be around 80 years old.
MCPA gained access to the arborist’s report.
A site inspection was carried out in Thursday 16th June 2022 identifying and assessing the one subject tree within the Mount Coot-tha Summit grounds. The subject tree is located immediately adjacent to the car park on the western side.
The subject tree is a Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig). It has a diameter at breast height of 224 cm, over 2 metres, with a total height of 16 metres.
The arborist recommended that the canopy of the tree be pruned off the building to achieve a minimum of 2 metres clearance.
UPDATE November 2023
The tree will be retained.
1882 – the Duke of Clarence and Prince George (later King George V) commemorated their visit to Mt Coot-tha by planting two Moreton Bay figs on the summit.

"Mount Coot-tha Summit Precinct Revitalisation Project"

Mantle Group Hospitality (Mantle Group) has lodged a development application to Brisbane City Council to “revitalise” the facilities at the iconic Mount Coot-tha Summit.
The original development application relates to the kiosk, café and lookout at 1012 Sir Samuel Griffith Drive and 200 Mount Coot-tha Road.
The original proposal consisted of two stages:
• Stage 1 of the proposed works includes internal refurbishments and extensions to the existing restaurant with new kitchen, dining and toilet facilities, while preserving heritage features of the building, and refurbishing the existing café building with new bar, kitchen, storage and extended terrace seating areas.
• Stage 2 of the proposal includes a new pavilion to replace the existing café building, including a new ground floor kitchen at the existing level, a rooftop indigenous food garden, lower ground accessible toilets, lift access, and ice cream making on premises.
• Stage 2 also proposes adding a First Nations experience celebrating stories and culture, which would be developed in partnership with Traditional Owners.

Information Request Response 20/11/2023
"On 20 July 2023, Council issued an Information Request. One of the key items raised by Council was that the proposal, in its original form, had the potential to impact on sightlines and views from the rotunda/lookout, which are of acknowledged importance under the Mt Coot-tha Neighbourhood Plan Code. Whilst the application included a detailed view analysis and a design that responded to the sightlines and views, the Applicant has taken the decision to remove the proposed pavilion building from the staged application. The Applicant instead proposes to proceed with the Stage 1 works that were contained within the original application, which proposes that, the existing café will be refurbished within its existing footprint. This will result in no changes to, or on, the sightlines and views from the rotunda/lookout.
Additionally, the kiosk works that were included in Stage 2 have been revised and no longer propose an extension to the building that would have housed a museum (amongst other things). Consequently, the museum use, which is defined as Community Use, has been removed from the application. Consequently, the application represents a much reduced scope of work, with Stage 2 in its entirety removed from the application. A meeting was held with Council on 27 October 2023 to discuss this change. Council acknowledged that the abovementioned changes are in response to the Information Request and that consequently a change application is not required. "
